The County Government of Taita Taveta has announced its readiness to allocate land for the establishment of an Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Voi, a bid set to boost industrialization and promote local manufacturing.
The move comes at a time when investors are urging the National Assembly to enact legislation that limits the importation of materials readily available within the country.
Speaking at the county headquarters in Mwatate during a visit by a national government delegation led by Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Governor Andrew Mwadime emphasized that industrialization is the key to addressing the county’s high unemployment rates.
“The county, which boasts of abundant mineral resources such as quartz, stands to benefit significantly from such initiatives. The establishment of the KES 11 billion iron ore factory is a game-changer for a county that has never had a single industry since the advent of devolution,” Governor Mwadime stated.
The county CEO reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for more investors with the sole aim of revolutionizing the current economic status.
He also highlighted the importance of collaboration with both state and non-state actors in overcoming financial challenges that hinder county development.
Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed that the Devki factory, a significant project in the county, will be officially opened by the Head of State next month. He also revealed that plans to establish an EPZ in Voi are already in progress, urging the county leadership to expedite the identification of suitable land for the project.
Narendra Ravala, Chairman of a major company group, expressed his commitment to supporting the nation’s economic growth through industrial expansion. However, he called on lawmakers to implement policies restricting the importation of items that can be produced locally.
“We have resources readily available. What we need is political goodwill to transform our nation,” Ravala remarked.
The ongoing efforts in Taita Taveta County reflect a broader strategy to use industrialization as a catalyst for economic growth and job creation. The county aims to transform into a hub of economic activity, leveraging its natural resources and strategic positioning.
