Officials from Taita Taveta County have joined their fellow coast region cluster members of Kwale for a three-day sensitization and training on county peer review mechanism, a key tool to assess development plans including County Integrated Development Plans (CIDPs), Kenya’s Vision 2030, the SDGs, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. The meeting is being held at Pride Inn Shanzu.
Leading the Taita Taveta delegation, CECM CPA. Arch. Martin Tairo emphasized the need for the full transfer of devolved functions along with the necessary resources to ensure effective implementation of devolution agenda.
“Good plans can only be realized if resources are made available. Currently, in Kenya, we are witnessing a deliberate effort by the central government to stifle county operations by crippling service delivery,” Tairo said.
Dr. Rose Kitur, Director of NEPAD Programmes, commended counties for their vital role in advancing Africa’s development agenda in line with the AU Agenda 2063.
“The NEPAD/APRM Kenya Secretariat remains committed to empowering local leaders, fostering strategic partnerships, and ensuring that the aspirations of Africans are realized through local governance and development initiatives,” she noted.
The NEPAD-sponsored meeting will also assess ten other counties on their progress in governance and development within devolved units.
The NEPAD/APRM Kenya Secretariat is a Semi-Autonomous Government Agency under The National Treasury and Economic Planning. Its core mandate is to promote, facilitate, and coordinate the African Union’s development and governance initiatives in Kenya.
