County Empowers Women
by adminCounty Government of Taita Taveta is committed towards empowering women economically through ensuring they get 30 per cent of county government tenders, Deputy Governor Majala Mlagui has stressed.
Speaking at Reneta and Franz Women empowerment centre in Eldoro Taveta, H.E Mlagui noted that the county government will ensure women get entrepreneurial skills to strengthen their business abilities.
The empowerment centre is funded by couples from Germany, Reneta and Franz who were brought to the area by Eliud Okumu, a resident from Eldoro.
The initiative was started in 2017 where 30 women were given an opportunity to undergo training in cloth making.Another 30 were recruited this year and are already undergoing training.
Mlagui commended the women for choosing to undertake technical skills training at the facility noting that it will go a long way in empowering their families economically.
“I will walk with you in every step of this empowerment journey. I will personally make sure that 30 per cent of county government tenders are given to women,” she said.
She challenged the women to not only focus on the local market for their products but also target the luxurious international market.
The deputy governor was accompanied by county women representative Lydia Haika and county trade and cooperatives CECM Gertrude Shuwe.
Haika promised to support the women through National government funding from her office.
“This is very encouraging. My office will support you fully. Form groups and apply for loans available from my office,” she said.
The empowerment centre has two classrooms, two offices and plans are underway to establish a shop a store and a designing classroom.
